Pomsky Education: Everything You Need to Know About Pomskies
Welcome to our Pomsky Education center!
At Ocean View Pomskies, we believe choosing a puppy starts with understanding the breed. Pomskies are intelligent, affectionate and playful companions that combine traits of the Siberian Husky and Pomeranian. From size and coat type to temperament, training, grooming and puppy care, we want families to understand what to expect before bringing a Pomsky puppy home.
Pomsky Sizes and Adult Weight
One of the unique things about Pomskies is the variety of sizes they can come in. Because they are a developing breed created from Pomeranian and Siberian Husky ancestry, adult size can vary even among puppies from the same litter.
At Ocean View Pomskies, we generally describe our Pomskies using the following size ranges:
Micro/Teacup Pomskies: approximately 4–7 pounds as adults. These are our tiniest Pomskies and are much less common. Their small size means they require extra care, especially as young puppies.
Toy Pomskies: approximately 5–15 pounds as adults. Toy Pomskies offer the beautiful Pomsky look in a smaller, more compact companion.
Mini Pomskies: approximately 12–20 pounds as adults. Minis are a wonderful middle ground for families wanting a smaller dog while still enjoying many of the characteristics people love about Pomskies.
Standard Pomskies: approximately 20–35 pounds as adults. Standard Pomskies are larger and often have more of the size and presence associated with their Husky ancestry. Adult weight is always an estimate.
Genetics, parent size, generation, growth rate and individual development can all influence a puppy’s final size. We do our best to give each family a realistic estimated adult-size range based on our experience and the puppy’s individual development.
Pomsky Temperament and Personality
Pomskies are known for being intelligent, affectionate, playful and full of personality. Many become extremely attached to their families and love being included in everyday activities. While people sometimes assume every Pomsky is extremely high-energy because of their Husky ancestry, temperament can vary considerably. Some Pomskies are active and adventurous, while others mature into relatively mellow companions who are perfectly happy relaxing with their people after getting appropriate exercise and mental stimulation. Pomskies can make wonderful family dogs and often do very well with children when properly socialized. They can also thrive in quieter homes with a devoted owner. The most important factor is finding a puppy whose individual temperament is a good match for the household. Early socialization, genetics and the environment in which a puppy is raised all play an important role in developing a confident, well-adjusted adult dog.
Pomsky Coat Types and Grooming
Pomskies can have several different coat types, and each creates a slightly different appearance.
Standard coats are generally shorter and less fluffy than plush or wooly coats while still having the beautiful double coat associated with Pomskies.
Plush coats have additional length and fullness, creating the fluffy teddy-bear appearance many people associate with the breed.
Wooly coats are longer and fuller, often creating a dramatic, very fluffy appearance with longer hair around the body, tail and face.
Pomskies are double-coated dogs and shedding should be expected. Most will shed throughout the year and experience heavier seasonal shedding when they “blow” their coat. Regular brushing helps remove loose undercoat, prevent tangles and keep the coat healthy. Routine nail trims, baths, blow drying and brushing are also important parts of maintaining a Pomsky’s coat and overall health. We begin introducing our puppies to grooming while they are young so these experiences become a normal part of life.
Pomsky Training and Socialization
Pomskies are intelligent dogs and can learn quickly, but intelligence can also mean they are creative and occasionally stubborn! Positive, consistent training from an early age helps establish good habits.
At Ocean View Pomskies, socialization begins long before our puppies leave for their new homes. Puppies are gradually introduced to age-appropriate experiences, household activity, grooming, different sounds, people and other animals. We also begin laying the foundation for crate training and potty training before puppies go home.
However, an eight-week-old puppy is still a baby, so families should expect to continue this training after bringing their puppy home. Consistency is extremely important. Establishing a predictable routine for meals, potty breaks, sleep, play and training helps puppies understand what is expected of them. Short, positive training sessions are often more effective than long sessions. Pomskies generally respond very well to praise, rewards and interaction with their owners.
Pomsky Puppy Care
Bringing home a Pomsky puppy is exciting, but the first several weeks are also an important adjustment period. Our puppies currently go home eating Diamond Naturals Small Breed Puppy food, and we recommend maintaining their familiar diet initially to avoid unnecessary stomach upset during an already significant transition.
Young puppies need regular meals, plenty of sleep, appropriate playtime and frequent opportunities to potty. Very small Toy and Micro puppies may require additional attention to ensure they are eating consistently.
Puppies should also continue an appropriate vaccination and deworming schedule with their veterinarian. Until your veterinarian considers your puppy adequately protected, avoid high-risk public areas where unknown or unvaccinated dogs may have been.
Grooming should continue at home from an early age. Regularly handling your puppy’s feet, ears and body and introducing brushing, bathing and nail trims helps make lifelong grooming much easier.
Exercise should be appropriate for your puppy’s age. Young puppies do not need strenuous forced exercise. Play, exploration, short training sessions and age-appropriate activities provide both physical exercise and valuable mental stimulation.
Pomsky Health and Responsible Breeding
Responsible breeding involves much more than producing beautiful puppies. Health, temperament and the long-term well-being of each generation should always be priorities.
At Ocean View Pomskies, we believe healthy puppies begin with thoughtfully selected, health-tested parents. Our breeding dogs undergo genetic testing through Embark, which allows us to screen for inherited genetic health conditions and better understand the genetics behind our breeding program. We also utilize OFA health testing, including appropriate evaluations such as cardiac and patella examinations.
Health testing helps breeders make more informed breeding decisions and reduce the risk of passing preventable hereditary conditions to future generations.
Health testing should not stop with a single generation. One of the advantages of an established breeding program is being able to follow the health, structure, temperament and development of dogs across multiple generations.
Ocean View Pomskies has been raising Pomskies since 2016, and health testing has been an important part of our program from the beginning.
Our goal is not simply to produce beautiful Pomskies, but healthy, happy companions that families can enjoy for years to come.
